Rough Cedar Lumber

Rough cedar lumber is a strong, fragrant, untreated wood great for outdoor projects, crafts, and anything that calls for a rustic look. Because rough cedar isn't kiln dried, it's got a higher moisture content. That means it's heavier than traditional cedar lumber, and it's stiffer too, meaning it doesn't bend or shape as well as traditional cedar; on the other hand, it's sturdier and has a much more rustic look.

Rough cedar is prone to the same tannin leakage as all cedar, so if you're painting it, make sure to use a heavy primer, or the tannins will bleed through the paint, causing discoloration.

Cedar is naturally moisture-resistant, pest-repellant, and far less susceptible to rot and decay than other woods. It has a pleasingly knotty appearance, but without the holes and warping that can accompany knots in other woods. It doesn't tend to shrink, expand, or warp in hot, humid weather, making it ideal for furniture that's used outdoors or in hot places.

Cedar is an essential element in any rustic farmhouse, modern cottage, cottage-core, or shabby chic-style home, whether it's a structural material or a decorative one.
