Sorby Small Sovereign Ultima Hollowing Blade is a versatile and precision-crafted tool designed for woodturners to create hollow forms up to 11 inches in diameter using both wet and dry woods. As part of the Robert Sorby Sovereign System, it also functions effectively as a stand-alone tool when installed in the Sovereign handle. This blade features a unique cutter system that slices through wood instead of scraping, allowing for smooth cutting and efficient clearing of shavings without clogging. It works equally well on bowl grain and end-grain projects, providing the flexibility to make both light and heavy cuts. The micro-adjust feature enables easy setting of cutter depth, enhancing control and precision.
The cutter is made from high-grade high-speed steel (HSS), with only one-third exposed at any time, allowing it to be rotated twice through 120 degrees before needing resharpening. Sharpening is straightforward using a diamond hone, and the cutter can be removed if necessary. An optional cutter sharpening jig is available, which is made from phosphor bronze and rotates freely within its sleeve, supporting sharpening with a diamond hone, bench grinder, or ProEdge. The jig also accommodates other full round cutters.
The tool’s articulating head and link system allow the creation of various hollow form shapes, from traditional vases to squashed forms. Additional links can be added for extreme undercutting, or removed to use the Ultima as a probe for straight-sided hollowing. The shaft measures 1/2 inch in diameter and is approximately 8-1/2 inches long below the articulating head, ensuring comfortable handling and control.
