Sorby Medium Sovereign Ultima Hollowing System, 22 in. is a versatile tool designed for woodturners to create hollow forms up to 16 inches in both wet and dry woods. As part of the Robert Sorby Sovereign System, it also functions effectively as a stand-alone tool. The cutter system is engineered to slice through wood rather than scrape, allowing shavings to clear smoothly without clogging. This system works well on both bowl grain and end-grain projects. The cutter can make light or heavy cuts, and its unique micro adjust feature lets the user easily set the cutter depth. Made from high-grade HSS, only one third of the cutter is exposed at a time, allowing it to be rotated twice through 120 degrees before needing to be sharpened. Sharpening is simple with a diamond hone, and the cutter can be removed if necessary. An optional cutter sharpening jig is available, which is made from phosphor bronze and rotates freely within its sleeve. This jig can be used with a diamond hone, bench grinder, or ProEdge and accommodates other full round cutters as well. The articulating head and link system provide the ability to create a variety of hollow form shapes, from traditional vases to squashed forms, with additional links available for extreme undercutting. Removing the links allows the Ultima to be used as a probe for straight-sided hollowing. An optional Ultima finishing head can be added to achieve smooth surface finishes, and other cutters are available for more advanced shape finishing.
