Sorby Excelsior Ultima Cutter is a high-performance woodturning tool designed for the connoisseur woodturner and those who frequently work with hard woods. This cutter features a Robert Sorby High Speed Steel Sovereign Ultima blade enhanced with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, which dramatically increases its edge-holding ability. Unlike traditional cutters that scrape, this tool slices through wood efficiently, allowing shavings to clear smoothly without clogging. It performs equally well on bowl grain and end-grain projects, making it versatile for various turning tasks.
Manufactured from high-grade high-speed steel, the cutter can handle both light and heavy cuts with ease. Only one-third of the cutter is exposed at a time, enabling it to be rotated twice through 120 degrees before requiring resharpening. Sharpening is simple with a diamond hone, and the cutter can be easily removed if needed. For added convenience, a sharpening jig is available as an optional extra. The cutter measures 1/2" in diameter and is crafted in England.
The Excelsior tool range is renowned for its plasma-bonded Titanium Nitride finish layered over triple-tempered high-speed steel, providing exceptional tool longevity and edge retention. In tests, the TiN coating outperforms the hardest wearing steel tools and even tungsten carbide, boasting a Rockwell hardness equivalent of 80. This means the Excelsior tools last four times longer than standard tools and surpass popular cryogenically treated and powdered metal turning tools. The TiN coating also reduces friction between metal and wood, especially beneficial when working with extremely hard or abrasive woods and knotted burrs. This results in more turning time and less sharpening time, enhancing productivity and user satisfaction.
