Sorby Excelsior Spindle Gouge, 1/4 in. features a blade enhanced with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating that dramatically increases its edge-holding ability, making it ideal for producing detailed work on between-center projects where the grain runs parallel to the lathe bed. This versatile tool is perfect for creating coves, beads, and other profiles on items such as goblets, vases, bed posts, candle sticks, and various spindle work. The 1/4" gouge comes with a 10" ash handle and an overall length of 16-1/2". Its High Speed Steel (HSS) blade combines traditional triple tempering with a plasma-bonded TiN finish, offering exceptional tool longevity and edge retention. Tested to outperform the hardest wearing steel tools and even tungsten carbide, the Excelsior cutting edge boasts a Rockwell hardness equivalent of 80, lasting up to four times longer than standard tools. This combination of TiN coating and HSS also prevents chipping and brittleness while allowing for easy sharpening. Additionally, the TiN coating reduces friction between metal and wood, especially effective when working with extremely hard or abrasive woods or cutting through knotted burrs, so you can spend more time turning and less time sharpening. Crafted in England, this tool is part of Robert Sorby’s Excelsior range designed for connoisseur woodturners and those who frequently work with hardwoods. Model Number: B840G062
