This wood encompasses all species of Khaya, with weights ranging from 33 lb/ft3 to 50 lb/ft3. Among these, Khaya Ivorensis stands out as the most sought-after variety due to its excellent stability and superior working properties. The heartwood initially appears distinctly pink when freshly sawn, then matures to colors varying from light pinkish-brown to a rich, deep reddish tone. The sapwood is yellowish-brown and sometimes blends subtly with the heartwood. This wood features an interlocking grain and a coarse texture that adds character to finished projects. When working with this turning blank, reducing the cutting angle to 15 degrees helps minimize surface pick-up, making it easier to achieve smooth cuts.
